Processed products from native pig, including lechon, tapa, tocino and siomai, developed by the Camarines Norte Lowland Rainfed Research Station (CNLRS) of the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office will soon be available in Daet, Camarines Norte.
This initiative is made possible through the project, “Production, Promotion and Commercialization of Native Pigs in Camarines Norte,” which was funded by the Bureau of Agricultural Research through its National Technology Commercialization Program.
The project sought to promote technologies on native pig production and commercialize processed native pork products in the province and help expand the native pork industry as a whole.
Leading the project were Engr. Bella Frias, CNLRS center chief; and Engr. John Leonard Andaya, study leader who played vital roles in accomplishing the activities and outputs.
Currently, the products are now being processed with the packaging and labeling soon to be ready for mass production together with Kristel Gabelle Moraleda Patawaran, technology adaptor.
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that the value of the livestock subsector’s output reached P79 billion at current prices.
“All livestock components contributed to the 9.85-percent growth in the gross earnings of the subsector. Higher production and price triggered the increase in the gross receipts from hog by 10.67 percent,” the PSA said.
In terms of volume, the PSA said the livestock subsector’s output rose by 1.8 percent on an annual basis in the second quarter.
“Hog production made a turnaround with this year’s 2.81-percent gain in production. This was attributed to higher farm-gate price, which encouraged hog raisers in Ilocos region, Bicol region and Northern Mindanao to dispose of their stocks,” the PSA said.
“The sustained demand in Central Luzon, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas was noted while the increases in live births and low mortality rate during the first quarter of 2018 resulted in more supply of fatteners in Calabarzon,” it added.
In the January-to-June period, the PSA said the livestock subsector’s gross output rose by nearly 2 percent on an annual basis.
